Order In Nature

Order in Nature is a handmade paper sculpture. I made the leaves from paper pulp made from dogwood leaves, recycled books, and natural dies. I pulp-painted the leaves and then printed a linocut block of leaf veins onto them. Along with the printed leaves, I made an edition of prints with the relief block and a jigsaw woodblock. I walked in the woods in search of the perfect sticks to create a matrix to organize the leaves onto. The practice of foraging in the woods, making, and organizing these leaves helps bring me contentment and order in my life. There is a juxtaposition between leaves found in the natural world versus how I have meticulously arranged the ones I created in patterns. This piece is also representational of the lack of control we as a society have on what mother nature brings our way. "Order in Nature" is my attempt at conceptually representing my need and want for control by bringing life back to the discards of nature by using natural and recycled materials in creating this piece.
